Normann Copenhagen
The Mat Chair

PROJECT DESCRIPTION —  Normann Copenhagen combines Danish design heritage with contemporary silhouettes and durable materials. With the Mat Chair, material innovation becomes the starting point.

Designed by Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, Mat is a contemporary shell chair developed through years of research. The shell is crafted from hemp and eelgrass — renewable, biobased materials that replace conventional fossil-based alternatives. The natural fibres are not applied as surface decoration; they define the structure, texture and character of the chair.

Mat is designed for disassembly, allowing components to be separated and recycled into new production. The collection includes dining chairs, armchairs and bar seating, available in hemp or hemp with added eelgrass, with optional upholstery.

For Normann Copenhagen, integrating eelgrass into a shell chair introduces a natural material within an industrial production context. For Søuld, the collaboration creates material synergy: fractions of eelgrass fibres not suited for acoustic panels can be utilised in the chair shell. The result is a more complete use of the resource — extending the life cycle of the material.
