Acoustic Fragments

Combining a geometric and versatile design expression, the Acoustic Fragments offer easy, seamless installation and high acoustic performance. Taking inspiration from tiles, the components can be arranged in endless ways on interior walls.

ACOUSTIC FRAGMENTS — Søuld Acoustic Fragments is a modular solution designed to create large, seamless acoustic surfaces. Acoustic Fragments combine a geometric and versatile design expression with easy, seamless installation and high acoustic performance.

Made from offcuts from Søuld’s eelgrass panels, the smaller elements can be rotated, shifted and combined in different configurations, allowing the system to adapt to walls of varying sizes and proportions.

The design is defined by precise cuts, rounded corners and bevelled edges that highlight the depth, texture and natural variation of the eelgrass. As the orientation changes, light and shadow introduce subtle rhythm and contrast across the surface.

Acoustic Fragments was developed around a circular principle: selected production offcuts are used directly in a new architectural application rather than first being shredded and reintroduced into new panels.

With Acoustic Class C performance and a modular construction designed for disassembly, Acoustic Fragments combine acoustic comfort, material character and architectural flexibility. Fragments No. 1 is the first design in the series.

Key features

Acoustic Fragments combines acoustic performance with a flexible modular format. The smaller components allow architects and designers to work with pattern, orientation and scale while preserving the natural character of the eelgrass.

  • Acoustic Class C
  • Modular acoustic wall system offering multiple pattern and orientation possibilities
  • Designed for disassembly
  • Eight tiles per box, tile dimensions: 540 × 270 × 35 mm
  • Designed and produced in Denmark

Sizes & Materials

Each Acoustic Fragments tile measures 540 × 270 × 35 mm and consists of Søuld Acoustic Boards FR mounted on a 6 mm MDF backing. One box contains eight tiles.

The smaller format makes it possible to build acoustic surfaces independently of conventional panel dimensions. The natural fibres, texture and colour variations of the eelgrass remain visible, while precise cuts and bevelled details introduce a distinct geometric expression.

Installation Patterns

Acoustic Fragments can be installed in straight compositions, rotated 90 degrees or shifted to create different patterns across the wall.

Changing the orientation of individual elements introduces variations in rhythm, depth and shadow, allowing the same module to create both calm, continuous surfaces and more dynamic compositions.

The modular system supports straightforward installation and disassembly, making individual elements easy to adapt or rearrange as interior needs change.

Behind the design

"With Fragments, I wanted to create a system where repetition does not lead to uniformity. The precise geometry creates rhythm, depth and shadow across the wall, while the natural variation of each piece of eelgrass keeps the surface tactile, imperfect and alive."

Designer & Co-founder Tobias Øhrstrøm

MATERIAL HONESTY — Inspired by the logic of tiles, the design divides the eelgrass material into smaller elements that can be repeated, rotated and shifted. This transforms a fixed panel into a flexible system capable of creating different architectural expressions across walls of varying scales.

The geometry of each fragment is carefully considered. Sharp grooves and bevelled edges meet softer rounded forms, balancing precision with the irregular fibres and tactile character of eelgrass. As the modules change orientation, light falls differently across the surface, creating subtle shifts in shadow and depth.

At the same time, the natural variation of the material remains visible from tile to tile. This creates a balance between a controlled geometric system and the inherent irregularity of a natural material.

The circular principle is equally central to the design. By using offcuts directly as new modular elements, Acoustic Fragments give an existing material another architectural application.

Cases

ACOUSTIC FRAGMENTS IN USE — Acoustic Fragments is designed for interiors where acoustic performance can become an active part of the architectural expression.

Used across larger wall surfaces or more focused areas, the modular system introduces texture, rhythm and depth while contributing to acoustic comfort.
