Sustainability

Made from naturally washed ashore, carbon-storing eelgrass, Søuld's acoustic panels are locally sourced and produced in Denmark. Designed for circularity and supported by independently third-party verified documentation, they offer architects, designers and builders a natural alternative for responsible construction.

A MATERIAL SHAPED BY THE SEA — Sustainability at Søuld begins with eelgrass that has naturally washed ashore along the Danish coastline. By combining centuries of material knowledge with contemporary manufacturing, we create acoustic materials that store carbon, are designed for circularity and contribute to healthy indoor environments.

Our approach is guided by transparency and long-term thinking. Every aspect of sustainability is supported by independently third-party verified documentation, including our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold certifications and biodiversity analysis. Together, they document not only the performance of our products, but also our commitment to responsible production and continuous improvement.

Key features

1

CARBON STORING — Søulds Acoustic Panels are made from eelgrass, a sea plant that naturally washes ashore during spring and autumn storms. During its growth, eelgrass binds large amounts of carbon and if left to decompose, it would release CO₂ back into the atmosphere. By storing this carbon in durable building materials, Søuld’s products serve as carbon storage.

Our certified EPD confirms there is more CO₂-eq bound in eelgrass than what is emitted during Søuld’s production of the final product (A1-A3).

CIRCULARITY — Søuld Acoustic Panels are designed to be fully circular. When panels reach end of use, they can be returned, processed and pressed into a new generation of Søuld products. The material remains in circulation. Our Acoustic Panels have achieved Gold in C2C Certified® Circularity

Søuld Acoustic Panels are designed to be fully circular. At the end of their use, the panels can be returned, processed and pressed into a new generation of Søuld products, keeping the material in circulation.

Our Acoustic Panels have achieved Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold in the Circularity category.

Currently, over 10% of production offcuts are reintroduced directly into new panels. The binder used in Søuld Acoustic Panels can be reactivated, allowing both offcuts and returned panels to be recycled without adding new binder.

To support this process, Søuld operates a take-back programme. Customers can return leftover or end-of-use panels to our production facility for recycling. The procedure is described in our Installation Manual.

DURABLE — For more than 400 years, eelgrass has demonstrated its remarkable durability. The historic eelgrass roofs of Læsø, some of which have lasted for more than 300 years, stand as a testament to the material's inherent resilience and longevity.

As part of our product development work, Søuld has produced acoustic panels using eelgrass from the restoration of one of Læsø's historic eelgrass roofs—material that had been exposed to the coastal climate for more than 300 years. The panels demonstrated the same high mechanical and aesthetic qualities as panels produced from newly collected eelgrass, highlighting the remarkable durability of the material itself and reinforcing our belief in its long-term potential.

At Søuld, this legacy inspires our ambition to create acoustic materials that remain in use for generations. By combining traditional material knowledge with contemporary manufacturing, we design products that are made to last, support circular material flows and retain their value over time.

LOW EMISSION— With documented low emissions, Søuld’s Acoustic Panels contribute to improved indoor air quality, supporting health and well-being. Classified as low dust-emitting, the panels are well suited for sensitive environments. Our Acoustic Panels have achieved Gold in Cradle to Cradle Certified® Material Health, version 4.1.

FULLY DOCUMENTED — All of Søulds certifications and data are 3rd party verified. Søuld has achieved three Gold level certifications under Cradle to Cradle Certified® version 4.1, for C2C Certified® Full Scope, version 4.1, C2C Certified® Material Health, version 4.1 and C2C Certified® Circularity, version 4.1. Documented by our EPD, Søuld acoustic panels store more carbon that was emitted during production, upon delivery to the client. Further, a third party verified biodiversity analysis documents that the collection of eelgrass causes no harm to the local marine and plantlife.

The Cradle to Cradle Certified® Products Program is a comprehensive framework that evaluates material health, circularity, climate impact, water stewardship and social fairness, and today, only three companies globally have achieved three separate C2C Certified® Gold Version 4.1 certifications.

BIODIVERSITY — Søuld's Acoustic Panels are made from already detached eelgrass, gently collected along the Danish coast after it has naturally washed ashore. A biodiversity analysis carried out by DHI documents that the collection of eelgrass does not negatively affect the seabed or the ecological integrity of the examined coastal stretches, including the natural distribution of eelgrass, birdlife and other species. By collecting the dead, but still fresh, eelgrass before it decomposes, the nutrients and carbon contained within the biomass are removed from the shoreline together with the material, helping to reduce the local return of nutrients to the sea while extending the storage of the carbon captured during the plant's growth. The collection of eelgrass is not a formal environmental mitigation measure.

7

MATERIAL HONESTY — Many building materials lose their connection to their natural origin during processing. Søuld's Acoustic Panels retain the distinctive character of the eelgrass, allowing the fibres to remain recognisable within every panel. This honest expression creates a sense of authenticity, comfort and a lasting connection to the material itself.

Søuld’s Acoustic Panels are made from natural eelgrass fibres, shaped by the sea  and characterised by subtle variations in colour, texture and structure. Rather than striving for visual perfection, we embrace the honest expression of the fibres — including its natural patina, scent, colour variations and soft tactile qualities. These values are an inherent part of working with natural materials and reflect the origin, authenticity and character of each panel.

8

TRANSPARENCY  Søuld is committed to conducting its business responsibly and with respect for both people and the environment. To support this commitment, we have established a set of guiding policies that provide the framework for our work within sustainability and ethical business practices. These include: Sustainability Policy, Code of Conduct and Whistleblower Policy.

Alongside our internal procedures to ensure compliance with these policies, our performance is independently reviewed every two years as part of our Cradle to Cradle Certified® certification process.
