The modular Wooden Joints combine soft Søuld Acoustic Mats with exposed beech fittings in a flexible system designed for disassembly. The construction enhances the tactility of the eelgrass while delivering Acoustic Class A sound absorption.

WOODEN JOINTS — Wooden Joints is a modular acoustic wall system developed to celebrate the softness and tactility of Søuld’s eelgrass material. By combining exposed Acoustic Mats with a simple beech joint, the design creates a flexible acoustic element where construction, material and expression are closely connected.

The system can be used as a single acoustic intervention or expanded into larger wall compositions, making it suitable for a wide range of interiors. Its open construction keeps the eelgrass fully visible, while the precise wooden joints introduce rhythm and structure to the soft surface.

Sizes & Materials

Each Wooden Joints element measures 550 × 550 mm and combines a soft Søuld Acoustic Mat made from eelgrass with specially crafted fittings in solid beech wood.

Rather than enclosing the eelgrass within a conventional frame, the construction leaves the material exposed. The wooden fittings gently tension the soft panels, creating a subtle curve while maintaining the visible fibres, texture and natural variation of the eelgrass.

Each box contains four acoustic tiles together with the corresponding Wooden Joints. The modular format allows the elements to be used individually or combined across larger wall surfaces, adapting to the scale and proportions of different interiors.

The contrast between the soft, porous eelgrass and the precise beech fittings gives Wooden Joints its distinctive expression — tactile and natural, yet clearly structured.

Wooden Joints are designed as a flexible modular system that can expand both horizontally and vertically.

A single set can function as a focused acoustic element, while multiple tiles can be installed together to create larger compositions across interior walls. The consistent spacing created by the wooden fittings establishes a clear rhythm between each tile and allows the individual elements to read as one coherent surface.

The system can be adapted to different wall dimensions and spatial requirements, making it suitable for smaller meeting rooms and residential interiors as well as larger workplace and hospitality environments.

Installation is intentionally straightforward. The customised beech fittings interlock and are held in place with a single screw, creating a construction that supports both assembly and disassembly. This allows individual components to be separated and the system to respond to changing interiors over time.

MATERIAL HONESTY — Rather than placing the eelgrass within a conventional frame or concealing the mounting system, the design reduces the element to two clearly expressed materials: soft eelgrass and solid beech.

The exposed wooden joints serve both a structural and aesthetic purpose. Customised to interlock, they hold the panels in place while gently tensioning the soft Acoustic Mats. This creates a slight curvature in the surface, emphasising the depth and porous character of the eelgrass.

The precision of the beech fittings contrasts with the natural variation of the fibres. Consistent spacing between the tiles introduces order and rhythm, while the softness and irregularity of the eelgrass prevent the composition from becoming rigid.

Material honesty is central to the design. There are no mouldings, decorative coverings or concealed fixings intended to disguise how the element is constructed. Instead, the materials and connections remain visible and become part of the overall expression.

The modular principle also allows Wooden Joints to grow with the space. Individual elements can be combined horizontally and vertically, creating anything from a small acoustic intervention to a larger continuous wall composition.
