Søuld is a Danish material manufacturer committed to providing forward-thinking designers, builders and end-users with carbon-storing and recyclable acoustic materials made from eelgrass.

ABOUT — Founded in 2010, Søuld produces carbon-storing, high performing and aesthetic alternatives to traditional acoustic products that can support the transition that the construction industry is undergoing. 

For more than a decade, Søuld has collaborated with ecologists, manufacturers and designers to develop acoustic products from eelgrass - an abundant, renewable local sea plant with deep roots in Danish building culture - to offer the industry a high performing biobased alternative to synthetic options. Søuld’s work has led to the revitalization of the 400-year-old eelgrass building tradition by optimising the material to fit the 21st century building industry. 

Engineered for residential and commercial spaces, Søuld’s eelgrass products create calm and comfortable indoor atmospheres that connect with nature through organic, tactile surfaces and the subtle scent of the sea.

Søuld’s products offer excellent acoustic properties, are highly resistant to fire and has very low VOC emissions as documented in our Cradle 2 Cradle Certified (read here) and serves as carbon storage (A1-A3). See full EPD here. 

Founded by architects and sustainable design engineers with a passion for quality, aesthetics and high performance materials, the Søuld team continuously works to push the limits of eelgrass processing, to enhance product quality and produce acoustic panels that meet the needs of the industry and end-users. 

TEAM — Søuld was founded by architects Tobias Øhrstrøm and Pi Fabrin, sustainable design engineers Gunnar Agerskov and Kirsten Lynge, and eelgrass thatcher Henning Johansen. The five Danish entrepreneurs established Søuld with a shared mission to contribute to the transition that the building industry is undergoing, by offering a carbon-storing alternative to traditiona building materials. 

The multidisciplinary expertise of the founders informs Søuld’s holistic approach to product development—from a deep understanding of eelgrass collection, to industry-leading manufacturing techniques and design for circularity. The Søuld team works with an intimate understanding of the industry and aims to innovate the market with functional, natural and aesthetic building materials that are attuned to the needs of contemporary architects and interior designers.

Today, Søuld is directed by Co-founders Kirsten Lynge & Tobias Øhrstrøm together with the partner Mads Arentoft.
