Cutting mats and boards

If you're considering using our materials for your project, you may be wondering about the cutting options available. Our products are made from natural eelgrass fibers and come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses to fit your needs. You can cut and proces the material as traditional building materials. Here is some further options and recommendations.

PROCESSING SØULD — If you have purchased our eelgrass acoustic material and want to process it for your project, there are several methods you can use, including:

Cutting with a circular saw
This is the most common option. You can use a circular saw with a fine-toothed blade to cut the material into the desired shape and size. Make sure to wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection, and to cut slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the material. 

Stamping out
You can also use a stamping press or die-cutting machine to punch out shapes from the eelgrass acoustic material. This method is ideal for creating multiple pieces with the same shape and size. See example with Laura Lange and Tom Dixon.

Cutting with waterjet
Waterjet cutting is a precise and efficient method for cutting the eelgrass acoustic material with minimal waste. You can use a waterjet cutter to create complex shapes and designs with high accuracy and speed. See example David Thulstrup

Creating bevels
On Søuld Acoustic Boards a beveled cut is an option. If you require a beveled cut for your Søuld Acoustic Boards, we recommend that you make the cuts yourself using your own equipment. This allows you to tailor the bevel angle to your specific needs and preferences. Our boards are easily cut with standard woodworking tools, such as a circular saw.

Whichever method you choose, make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety precautions to ensure proper handling and processing of the material. Once processed, you can install the eelgrass acoustic material using the mounting instructions. Søuld’s Installation Instructions are provided as a guide for the installer, and it is the installer’s responsibility to complete all necessary preparation. For optimal results the installer must properly assess the conditions of the building and installation surfaces, select the appropriate suppliers/ contractors, and carefully follow Søuld’s instructions.

Colouring mats and boards

By dyeing your Søuld Acoustic Boards with natural pigments or linseed oil, you can customize the color and appearance of your installation while still maintaining the natural and sustainable properties of our materials. 

COLORS — Dyeing Søuld Acoustic Products with Natural Pigments or Linseed Oil. If you want to add some color to your Søuld Acoustic Products, you can dye them using natural stains or linseed oil. Our material are made from natural eelgrass fibers and are highly absorbent, making them an ideal canvas for dyeing.  We always recommend you to start with test on a small sample of our material. Remember that Søuld at the moment do not provide the materials in colors - so this is a post process for after purchasing our products. As well applying color will also influence the fire-classification, as all our certifications are done without dyeing in colors.

Sizes for mats and boards

We offer our materials in a range of standard sizes and thickness to fit various installation needs. We can also customizes the sizes to fit your specific needs.

SIZES — we offer our Søuld Acoustic Boards & Søuld Acoustic Mats in two standard sizes:

• 1100x600 mm
• 1100x3000 mm

And it comes in 3 different thickness

• 18 mm
• 35 mm
• 40 mm

If you need a different size or shape for your installation, we offer custom cutting services. However, please note that we require a minimum order of 3 pieces of 3000x1100 mm material for custom cutting. Payment is made per full 3000x1100 mm material that is cut. 

With our CNC circular saw machine, we can create custom shapes and sizes with precision and accuracy. Simply provide us with your specifications and we'll work with you to create the perfect solution for your project.

Mounting

We pride ourselves on creating acoustic materials that are not only high-quality but also easy to install. Our acoustic panels are lightweight and can be glued directly onto ceilings, making the installation process quick and efficient.  Our Søuld Acoustic Mats can also be mounted with our Design Solutions.

• Our Wooden Frames offers a more traditional look with visible wooden frames that surround each panel. Mounting the frames is as easy as mounting a regular picture on a wall, and they provide a secure hold for the panels.
