PROJECT DESCRIPTION — In collaboration with Tom Dixon, Søuld Acoustic Mats were explored in a new context — repurposed as upholstery for the iconic Bird chaise.
Presented during the ‘Tom Dixon Twenty’ exhibition in Milan in 2022, the project examined whether Søuld’s eelgrass-based acoustic material could function as an alternative to petrochemical-based foam. The sculptural form of the chair offered a clear and honest framework for testing comfort, tactility, and material performance.
The result demonstrated how a traditional, biogenic material can be reimagined beyond its original application — highlighting eelgrass as a soft, supportive, and sensorial surface with potential far beyond acoustic regulation.
